Online Safety
The internet is a brilliant tool for learning and staying connected, but it's important that we all work together to keep children safe online — both at nursery and at home.
What we do at Lilycroft
We support children to use computers as part of their learning, and we make sure that any websites children access in nursery are safe and appropriate. We also talk to children about how to stay safe online in an age-appropriate way.
What you can do at home
Here are some simple steps to help keep your child safe when they're using the internet at home:
- Keep computers and tablets in a shared family area so you can keep an eye on what your child is looking at
- Set up a filtering system to block unsuitable content — if you're not sure how to do this, contact your internet provider and they will be able to help
- Make it a rule that your child always asks an adult before going online or sending an email
- Remind your child to only talk to people they know online, and never to share personal details such as their age, address or school
- Make sure your child knows never to arrange to meet anyone they have only spoken to online
- Encourage your child to only look at things they know they are allowed to see — and to check with an adult if they're not sure
- Talk to your child about being kind online and not posting or saying anything that could upset others
Most importantly, make sure your child knows that if they ever see something that worries or upsets them online, they should come to an adult straight away — no matter what it is. They will never be in trouble for telling you.
